Rome's first metro line, Line B, opened in February 1955 between Termini and EUR, a route first planned for a 1942 World's Fair that was never held. Line A followed in 1980, and Line C, Italy's first fully automated metro, began service in 2014 and reached Colosseo in December 2025. Because tunneling keeps running into archaeological remains, the metro has grown slowly, so the regional FL lines, the Roma-Lido and Roma-Viterbo suburban railways, and the tram network fill in much of the city's rail service.
