Lisbon

Lisbon got its first metro line at the end of 1959, when a single Y-shaped line opened from Restauradores to the north of the city. Long before that, the city's trams had been electrified in 1901, and Tram 28 still winds through the old quarters in traditional cars. In the sixty-plus years since, the metro has grown to four lines. In May 1998 the Red Line opened three days before Expo 98, serving the Expo site at Oriente, and in 2012 it was extended to Lisbon Airport, letting travelers ride the metro straight into the city.
