Moscow got its first metro line in May 1935, when the first route opened from Sokolniki, splitting into two branches at Okhotny Ryad. Many of its stations are decorated like palaces, from Komsomolskaya with its chandeliers to Mayakovskaya, which served as an air raid shelter during World War II. In the ninety years since, the network has kept expanding. The Moscow Central Circle opened in 2016 on an old railway ring, with fares integrated with the metro and free transfers, and in 2023 the Big Circle Line was completed, forming a second metro ring around the outer city.
